Finally back online! I thought it was about time I shared with you my literary crushes. After all, what's more magic and wonderful than words?
I'll start with a contemporary/fantastic French novel that I just read and just can't get over. Below is my review in English and then French - since I read it in French and I think it hasn't been translated yet. However you can still get an idea of the story and possibly add it in advance to your reading list, because I'd be very surprised if it doesn't get published in English soon!

REVIEW IN ENGLISH
Enter the
extraordinary world of Dragongirl… or rather, let her enter yours.
Find out
how being the most powerful being on Earth somehow turns a little girl into a
commodity for the weak and despicable humans that we are.
Go behind
the scenes with this unusual tale where becoming a superhero is suddenly way
less desirable. Discover how the one who already masters more abilities than
any other human succeeds in getting rid of the most insane expectations society
threw upon her, to finally grow and become her own person. If she can, we can!
A unique
and complicated coming-of-age story, but one we can instantly identify with:
sometimes, the hardest thing to do is to be strong and brave, to accept hurtful
truths and to find hope again in the pandemonium of human madness.
This feel-good
story, so true despite its fantastic nature, is now one of my favorites. It
inspires us by its depiction of a will stronger than any impediment, of a
resilient freedom essential to any of us and by its unwavering optimism in
spite of the injuries reality keeps inflicting us. Pit Agarmen, aka Martin
Page, undoubtedly knows how to use the codes and clichés of pop culture to
create a unique and contemporary novel. He also rocks at giving you an insight
into the very diverse perspective of each and every character of the supporting
cast. A quick read, delectable with its treasures of cultural references and
ethical ideas scattered along the pages, it’s a book I would recommend to
anyone who is looking for their place in this cruel and brilliant world, to
anyone who still holds on to their inner child or is looking to wake him/her
up, to anyone who wants to love life – in all its violent splendor.
Warning: some scenes are NOT for the faint of
heart.

Terre transforme une simple petite fille en une commodité pour les faibles et
misérables humains que nous sommes.
Passez du côté de l’envers du décor dans ce conte inhabituel
où devenir un superhéros est soudainement beaucoup moins enviable… Et découvrez
comment celle qui accumule déjà plus de capacités qu’aucun autre être humain
parvient à se défaire des attentes les plus folles de la société pour enfin
grandir et devenir un individu à part entière. Si elle le peut, nous
aussi !
Un passage à l’âge adulte unique et compliqué mais auquel on
s’identifie instantanément : parfois, le plus difficile est d’être fort et
courageux, d’accepter les vérités qui font mal et de retrouver espoir en plein
charivari de la folie humaine.
Ce récit, si vrai malgré sa nature fantaisiste, fait
désormais partie de mes histoires préférées. Il motive par sa description d’une
volonté résistante à tout obstacle, d’une liberté résiliente et essentielle à
chacun et par son optimisme inébranlable malgré les blessures que la réalité
nous inflige. Pit Agarmen, alias Martin Page, sait indéniablement réutiliser
les codes et clichés de la culture pop pour les transformer en un roman unique
et actuel. Il est sait aussi très bien nous donner un aperçu des visions
variées de chacun des nombreux personnages secondaires. Rapide à lire, délicieux
de par ses trésors de références culturelles et d’idées éthiques disséminées
dans ses pages, c’est un livre que je recommande à tous ceux qui cherchent leur
place dans un monde cruel et brillant, qui ont toujours une part d’enfance
émerveillée dans leur cœur ou cherchent à la réveiller, à tous ceux qui veulent
aimer la vie – dans toute sa violente splendeur.
Attention : certaines scènes sont d’une violence
extrêmement graphique.
